Young Peoples Quality of Life Survey 2008

This is the first time a young people’s research project of this scale has been undertaken within Sedgefield Borough and provides a ‘snap shot’ of what it is like for children and young people living within the Borough.
It was commissioned through the Sedgefield Local Strategic Partnership with the research being carried out by The Cornforth Partnership and supported through the Cornforth Youth Aloud Young People’s Forum.

A total of 942 children and young people were engaged, predominantly from school years 6 and 10. The research used a mixture of questionnaire and focus group work which tackled such themes as:

  • Demographic information - Life in their community
  • Community safety - Care responsibilities
  • Volunteering - Respect
  • Health and lifestyle - Support
The research questionnaire engaged with 20 primary and 7 Secondary schools from throughout the Borough providing an equal amount of responses from each school cluster.

The Focus groups were carried out with young people from the following backgrounds:

  • The Youth Engagement Service - DISC Young Carers
  • Young Travellers Group - Young Parents
  • The L.A.D.D.E.R. Centre - West Cornforth (Rural Group)
This will provide the Sedgefield Local Children’s Board (LCB), and its partners, with the necessary information to prioritise their work load over the next two years. The research has been set out to accommodate the delivery mechanism for the LCB which is currently based around the 5 geographical localities, providing concise information relevant to those areas.

The final word comes from the Cornforth Youth Aloud group;

‘Whatever your motivation for reading this research, we trust that you will find the data to be accessible, understandable and useful, but most of all we hope that you will act upon it, so that we can respond to what children and young people are saying and deliver services that are both relevant and needed’.
