Welcome to our second "Children and Young People’s Plan" which covers the period 2009 to 2012. Since the publication of our last plan in 2006, much work has been done by the Children’s Trust on those things which matter most to children, young people and families. This has resulted in some significant improvements and achievements across County Durham.

Tellus 4 Survey results
Tellus is a survey of children and young people across England, asking their views about their local area, with questions covering the Every Child Matters outcomes.
The findings from the Tellus 4 survey show that performance is better than those local authorities which are similar to County Durham in the following areas:
- Children and young people eating 3 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Young people going out on Friday or Saturday night to take part in any activities such as sports, arts, media or go to a youth centre or club.
- Young people worrying about what to do after Year 11.
- Young people having safe places to go on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Pupils disrupting lessons.
- Children and young people’s ideas being listened to when they have given them to their school council or in other ways.
County Durham’s performance is below that of similar authorities in relation to:
- Children and young people walking or biking to school.
- Children and young people’s misuse of alcohol.
- Children and young people being bullied either at or not in school.
- Children and young people’s satisfaction with parks and play areas.
- Pupils in Year 6 getting help from their teachers to plan their future.
- How helpful children and young people find the information and advice they get in school on staying safe.
- The activities (like sport and drama) that are available for children and young people to take part in at lunch time or after school.
