Participation Strategy for Children and Young People in County Durham and The Parent Participation Strategy

.......

Children & Young People Participation Strategy

The Participation Strategy for Children and Young People requires all organisations involved in delivering services to children and young people to assess their current infrastructure and work toward making those changes required to enable true participation.

Endorsement of the Participation Strategy for children and young people represents the collective commitment of all services, statutory and non-statutory to listen and involve children and young people in service design, delivery and evaluation

Participation activity in County Durham is diverse and eclectic. It has been judged as excellent by inspectors in 2006, although it was noted that an overarching strategy was not in place. This strategy overarches all activity and promotes a common commitment to build a culture of participation.

In addition, through the tool kit, the strategy offers support to all agencies to develop their practice.

Parent Participation Strategy

This strategy follows on from the participation strategy for children and young people to ensure we are taking the measures required to ensure the involvement of families.

The Parent Participation Strategy is a product of the County Durham Parenting Network, and has undergone a small consultation process by parents.

Endorsement of the Parent Participation Strategy will be a step toward a collective commitment of all services, statutory and non-statutory to listen and involve parents/carers in service design, delivery and evaluation.

As with the Participation Strategy for children and young people, this too will require all organisations involved in delivering services to families, to assess their current infrastructure and work toward making those changes required to enable true participation.

Participation of parents and carers in County Durham is unfortunately not common practice especially with parents of young people (teenagers). This strategy aims to invite partner agencies and services to commit to a culture of participation and make the necessary changes required to enable this practice and overcome potential challenges.

In addition, through the self-assessment and action plan tool kit, the strategy offers support to all agencies to develop their practice of participation.
