There are estimated to be 108,900 children and young people growing up in County Durham in 2005. Their experience of being healthy and staying safe, of enjoying and achieving, of making a positive contribution and attaining economic security, varies enormously across this large county. Most children and young people growing up in County Durham, live as part of their family, within their community, attending schools, using play and leisure facilities, transport, health and social care services, and a wide range of other services as they are needed. This section of the Audit of Needs and Services provides an overview of the 0-19 age population of Durham using a range of indicators. A number of features can be identified which distinguish how growing up in Durham is different to growing up elsewhere in the country.
